How to Clean Up Photos Before Getting a New iPhone

Remove obvious clutter before the transfer, confirm your backup, and erase the old iPhone only after the new one is ready.

Check the photo library first

A new phone does not need years of accidental screenshots and failed attempts. Start with items that are easy to judge so the transfer carries less clutter.

  1. Merge exact duplicates in Photos if the Duplicates collection is available.
  2. Review old screenshots and screen recordings.
  3. Remove large videos you no longer want.
  4. Make a short visual pass through repeated or blurry shots.

Make sure the library is protected

Check that iCloud Photos has finished syncing or create a current backup. If important photos live outside iCloud, import them to a computer or another archive before deleting them.

Transfer to the new iPhone

Use Quick Start when both iPhones are available. Keep them near each other and connected to power until the transfer and photo syncing finish.

  1. Start the new iPhone beside the old one.
  2. Follow the Quick Start prompts.
  3. Wait for apps, photos, and messages to appear.
  4. Open several recent and older photos on the new iPhone.

Erase the old phone last

Do not erase the old iPhone until you have confirmed the new device and any separate archives. When ready, use Settings > General > Transfer or Reset iPhone > Erase All Content and Settings.

Common questions

Should I empty Recently Deleted before transferring?

Only after reviewing it carefully. Emptying it can free space, but those photos cannot be recovered from the album afterward.

Can I clean the old iPhone after setting up the new one?

You can, but with iCloud Photos on, deleting from the old phone also changes the synced library on the new phone. Clean intentionally, not as a way to erase only the old device.
