How to Move Photos Off Your iPhone Before Deleting Them
Copy important photos to a computer or drive, verify the copy, then remove only what you no longer want on the iPhone.

Import photos to a Mac or Windows PC, or export them to an external drive. Open several copied files before deleting anything. If iCloud Photos is on, deleting from the iPhone also deletes from the synced iCloud library, but it does not erase a separate exported copy.
Choose where the copy will live
A computer is simplest for a large library. An external drive is useful when you want a separate archive. AirDrop works well for a small selection.
Import to a Mac
Connect the iPhone with a cable, unlock it, and trust the computer when asked. Open Photos on the Mac, select the iPhone in the sidebar, then import the photos you want to keep.
- Connect and unlock the iPhone.
- Open Photos on the Mac.
- Select the iPhone under Devices.
- Choose Import Selected or Import All New Photos.
- Open several imported photos and videos before continuing.
Import to Windows
Install Apple Devices, connect the iPhone, unlock it, and tap Trust or Allow. Then use the Microsoft Photos import flow. If iCloud Photos is on, Apple notes that full-resolution originals may need to download before a cable import.
Delete only after checking the copy
Confirm that photos open, videos play, dates look correct, and the archive exists in more than one place if the memories are irreplaceable. Then clean the iPhone library and review Recently Deleted before removing anything permanently.
Common questions
Will deleting from iPhone delete the copies on my computer?
A separate imported or exported file remains on the computer. A photo that only appears through a synced iCloud Photos library is not a separate archive.
Can I move photos to an external drive from iPhone?
Yes. Connect a compatible drive, select the photos, and use Export Unmodified Original to save them to the drive in Files.
