How to Use Spaced Repetition With Flashcards

Review cards at growing intervals so difficult ideas return sooner and familiar ideas wait longer.

Quick answer

Answer each card before revealing it. Review missed cards again soon, and wait longer before reviewing cards you know. Increase the gap as a memory becomes stronger.

Use a simple starting rhythm

You can begin with reviews around day 1, day 3, day 7, and day 14. Treat that as a starting point, not a perfect formula.

  1. Try to answer before flipping the card.
  2. Mark whether the answer was hard, partial, or easy.
  3. Bring missed cards back sooner.
  4. Give easy cards a longer gap.

Keep the cards small

One focused question is easier to judge than a card asking for an entire chapter. Split large answers into several cards.

Common questions

Is spaced repetition the same as cramming?

No. It spreads active reviews over time instead of packing them into one session.

What is the perfect review interval?

There is no single interval for every learner and topic. Adjust based on how well you remember each card.
