How to Use Active Recall With Flashcards
Use flashcards to pull information from memory instead of repeatedly rereading it.

Read the question, answer fully before revealing the back, check yourself honestly, and revisit missed cards later. The attempt to retrieve is the useful part.
Answer before you flip
Familiarity is not recall. Say or write the answer with the back hidden, then compare. Mark a card correct only when you could produce the important idea.
Space the reviews
Review missed cards sooner and known cards later. Mix topics occasionally so you must identify which idea applies instead of following a memorized order.
- Attempt the answer.
- Reveal and correct it.
- Explain the idea in your own words.
- Schedule the next review.
Common questions
Is rereading the card useful?
It can introduce the material, but recalling it without looking gives a stronger check of learning.
Should answers be word-for-word?
Only when exact wording matters. Otherwise, aim for the correct idea in your own words.
