What Optimize iPhone Storage Actually Does
Optimize Storage keeps smaller photo copies on your iPhone while full-resolution originals remain in iCloud.

Optimize iPhone Storage reduces the space your photo library uses on the phone. It does not shrink the full-resolution library stored in iCloud, and it may take time to reclaim space after you turn it on.
Turn it on
Use Optimize Storage when you want access to the whole library without keeping every full-resolution original on the iPhone.
- Open Settings and tap your name.
- Tap iCloud, then Photos.
- Turn on Sync this iPhone if needed.
- Choose Optimize iPhone Storage.
What stays on the phone
The Photos app keeps storage-saving versions on the iPhone when space is needed. The original photos and videos remain in iCloud and download when you open, edit, or share them.
What it does not fix
Optimize Storage does not reduce the amount of iCloud storage used by the library. It also cannot decide which screenshots, repeated attempts, or old videos you no longer want. Those still need a deliberate cleanup.
If storage is still full
Give the phone time on Wi-Fi and power, then check iPhone Storage again. If Photos is still large, review long videos, screen recordings, downloads, screenshots, and unwanted shots.
